On a side note, on my real Arkanoid 2 takes about 1/3 of a turn (somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees rotation) to get the vaus from one side of the screen to the other. But I do have an actual Arkanoid 2 machine to compare to once I get the spinner in MAME. I have an original Millipede ball with original bearings, which are the best spinning ones I've ever felt, and have not been able to find ones as good as those yet. I dont have a spinner set up to play it in MAME yet though so I cant tell. The action on this spinner is silky smooth and more responsive. The first thing I did was swap spinners entirely. In order to dig into this further, I acquired a second spinner (thanks 34k) to dissect and compare with mine.

I've been looking into new replacement bearings, and have tried several types of Chinese ones from places like ebay, including ceramic ones, with mixed results (and have also tried flushing out the factory lube and replacing with Liquid Bearings, etc). This works, but if the bearings were rusted, they end up pitted, and will spin ok, but are noisy. You can use Liquid Bearings as well, but I find the silicone just lasts longer before you need to re-lube, and there are only two points to lube, so it's not that hard to apply with a toothpick (as opposed to the Arkanoid spinners, which have many points).įor trakballs, I've tried rejuvenating old rusty bearings, soaking them, spinning them in a drill, flushing them out, drying, then re-lubing with Liquid Bearings.
I use 100% silicone grease on Tempest spinners, which is lighter and more slippery, and I prefer the feel much better (as I'm a regular Tempest player). But it made the spinner spin down too quickly. I know on Tempest spinners I've tried Nyogel (which was the recommended lube from Atari), which I found to be too thick, as it's a dampening grease, and is meant to be sticky. I can't speak for sewing machine oil, but the lube can make a difference.
